Chapter 5.3: Compartmentation And Fire Barriers - Fire Protection Engineering

Compartmentation
Compartmentation is a pivotal strategy in passive fire protection. It involves dividing a building into fire compartments, with each compartment designed to contain a fire for a specified period. Compartmentation is a fundamental means of preventing the spread of fire and smoke from one area to another, allowing occupants to evacuate safely. Essential components of compartmentation include fire doors, fire-rated walls, and fire barriers.
Fire Barriers
Fire barriers are vertical or horizontal partitions within a building designed to prevent the passage of fire and smoke. These barriers are constructed using fire-resistant materials and include fire-rated doors, windows, and penetrations that are fire-stopped to maintain the barrier's integrity.
