Chapter 9.2: First Aid For Electrical Injuries - Electrical Safety
Posted by Arowosegbe Olawale in General
Electrical injuries can vary in severity, from minor burns to more extensive trauma. Administering first aid correctly can make a significant difference in the outcome. Here is how to provide first aid for electrical injuries:
1. Call for Medical Help
Regardless of the severity of the electrical injury, seek professional medical assistance immediately because even minor injuries can have internal complications.
2. Ensure Safety
Before assisting the victim, ensure the area is safe by disconnecting the power source or using non-conductive materials to move the victim away from the electrical source.
3. Assess Injuries
Evaluate the extent of the injuries. Electrical injuries can cause burns, muscle contractions, fractures, or internal damage. Attend to any visible injuries as necessary.
4. Burn Care
For electrical burns, follow these steps:
- Cool the Burn: Rinse the burn with cold running water for at least 10 minutes to cool the tissue.
- Protect the Burn: Cover the burn with a sterile, non-stick dressing or a clean, dry cloth.
- Elevate the Burned Area: If possible, raise the injured part above the level of the heart.
5. CPR
If the victim is unresponsive and not breathing, begin CPR until professional medical help arrives. Continue CPR until the victim regains consciousness or until professional responders take over.
6. Monitor for Shock
Electrical injuries can lead to shock. Keep the victim lying down and elevate their legs if no spinal injury is suspected. Cover the victim with a blanket to maintain body temperature.
7. Do Not Apply Creams or Ointments
Avoid applying creams, ointments, adhesive bandages, or adhesive tape directly to electrical burns.
8. Keep the Victim Calm
Reassure the victim and keep them as calm as possible while awaiting medical help.
